“Remote” Colour Analysis: how it works with Your Colour & Style

23rd July 2020 by Fiona Mobbs

What is Colour Analysis?

Colour analysis is the process of discovering which colours of clothing, accessories, make-up, and hair-dye look best on someone, so they can shop with knowledge and focus to make themselves look healthiest and most attractive, and save wasting money on items that don’t serve them well.

How Covid-19 changed things

When I trained over 11 years ago, I never imagined I would be able to colour-analyse through the internet! Yet, that’s exactly what I’ve been doing since the world adapted because of Covid-19. I, like many business owners, had to re-think my business proposition to make it work in this new world. (Thank goodness for the internet and Zoom I say!)

Because I am experienced, I have worked out a system that works for my clients and me, although I cannot guarantee it will work in 100% of cases because there are a few variables that I can’t control when working “remotely”. So, my system comprises of posting some drapes to the client in advance of the consultation, them sending me some pictures, then carrying out the analysis using Zoom (so they can also have a recording – a new bonus from this process) and completing the analysis at their home face-to-face when possible. A total of 3 hours for £150, backed by the guarantee that if it cannot be completed on-line either money-back, or conducting the analysis in the usual face-to-face way at my client’s home, with adequate safety measures in place.

A recent client example

I recently had the delight to conduct an analysis for the lovely Suzy, who helpfully (as a seasoned brand photographer) was able to take her own before and after pictures! I think you’ll agree they are stunning and show how the harmonious “autumn” colour shades create rapport with her features and make her look the warm and friendly person she is.

We discovered she was an “autumn”, meaning that she needs warm and soft colours to best combine with her natural skin tone, hair colouring and eyes. As it happened, one of those colours (a teal or kingfisher) she had chosen as her business brand colour, so she obviously loved it.

As part of the analysis I offer, I like to connect the theory with my client’s reality – and that involves discussion about the clothes they already own. It may be that I can give advice about making something work better; combining items that the client had never thought of; or what to do with something that the client is ready to put away or move on as they now know it is not best for them. All clients declare, as did Suzy, that this would be the scariest bit, but I can reveal that 100% of my clients afterwards say this is “the best bit” (I think because it makes the theory come alive and is practical for them).

The Client’s Perspective

Suzy kindly wrote about her experience, from the client’s perspective, and I am delighted to share it here with you.

The words of Suzy Ellis, Brand Photographer

” I’ve never been particularly into fashion, much preferring comfort over style. However I recently met Fiona in a networking meeting and what she had to say really grabbed my attention. I decided to join her online clothing swap as I was getting very depressed wearing the same tatty jeans and ancient T-shirt’s every day and thought this could be the opportunity for a change. My body shape and size has changed since having children so my wardrobe was full of clothes which I was desperately hanging onto in the hopes that I might fit back into them one day. Fiona’s event seemed like the perfect opportunity to get some new clothes.

The event was great fun and I ended up with some lovely new items, however one thing I did notice was that the other ladies on the call all seemed to be aware of their “colours”. This is something I’ve never really considered before.  I’d always just bought clothes which I liked the look of and which (I hoped) were a flattering style. It never really occurred to me that there were specific colours which would compliment my skin tone, hair and eye colour. That would make me look healthy and bright.. and that would cause people to actually compliment me on my outfit (not a common occurrence for me).

After chatting with Fiona I booked one of her remote colour and style consultations. She explained how it would work, partly via zoom meeting and partly face to face when we were able to safely work together. She then arranged for me to have a pack of colour charts, multi coloured swatches and a colour wheel delivered to my house. I sent Fiona some images before the consultation of my face without makeup or jewellery so she could see my skin, eye and hair colour.

The Zoom Meeting

The Zoom meeting was fantastic! Fiona explained all of the seasonal colours to me and how and why colours compliment each other. We discussed my usual clothes and what colours I usually wear and why. I then used the colour swatches to hold up near my face for Fiona to see which tones suited me best. We both came to the conclusion that autumn colours worked best with my complexion. Afterwards, Fiona helped me go through some of the items in my wardrobe to see whether they would work with my colouring. It wasn’t just a case of … no that doesn’t work, get rid of it. She recommended how I could accessorise some of my clothes to make them look better, possibly take them to a tailor to be adjusted or even save some of the nicer items for my daughter when she is a bit older. I was slightly worried about this part of the consultation as my wardrobe is not something I’m proud of, but Fiona was so wonderful. She didn’t bat an eyelid about the random things I pulled out, and even encouraged me to give some of my older clothes a second chance. It was a lovely experience and I am very much looking forward to our meeting in person to talk a little more about makeup and accessories.

I have now had a sort out of my wardrobe and bought some new items in colours which I’ve never considered before but I think will suit me. I’m looking forward to going shopping again with my colour palette and I finally feel like I can spend my money wisely on clothes that I will actually wear and feel happy and confident in. “

Fiona says:

I am delighted that this analysis was able to be concluded for Suzy, and that she is now on her way to looking her best every day with ease.

If you want to see what can happen for you, Fiona can offer on-line analysis, as well as wardrobe consultations and support if you are buying new clothes, whether that’s brand new, or just new for you (ie previously loved).

Suzy’s website is here for anyone wanting her help for their brand photography.

A Wardrobe Overhaul

28th December 2019 by Fiona Mobbs

A Much Needed Wardrobe Overhaul

Priceless! That’s the only word to describe the help that Fiona has given me with my wardrobe overhaul, which in hindsight was long overdue!

From the enlightening home colour consultation and wardrobe de-clutter, to the experience of finding new clothes (that actually suit me) with a personal shopper, Fiona has been a complete inspiration, and totally professional.

Fiona has helped me to take a fresh look at both the colours I wear and the style of my clothes. I now look at colours in a different way. I know which colours are best for me and what colours to avoid. Now I feel so much better in the clothes that I wear and that boosts my confidence too.

Recommendation

I highly recommend Fiona’s services if you want to make a great impression with the way that you dress. And for that extra feel good factor take Fiona with you as your personal shopper, it will change the way you shop for clothes. Thanks for all your expertise and help Fiona.

Shopping Support for Special Birthday

28th December 2019 by Fiona Mobbs

My approaching 50th birthday party

I had a week to go before my 50th birthday party and still hadn’t found a dress to wear and was getting a bit worried, so I asked Bradbeers in Romsey if they had a clothing consultant to help me. They didn’t but gave me Fiona’s card. I phoned her up and agreed to meet her at Bradbeers. I am very busy with work and family so only had an hour to spare. I have had my “colours done” in the past but because our house is in the middle of a building project, the colour sample cards were packed away somewhere, but Fiona told me not to worry as she would know which colours would suit me. Fiona was totally amazing! – she scoured the shop and brought me lots of different items to try on as well as matching shoes, handbags and jewellery.

Result!

At the end of the hour, not only had I found a fantastic party dress, but also a daytime wrap around dress and a sparkly purple top to wear at a business drinks evening that week! I could never have achieved that by myself!

And there was more!

She also introduced me to an online shop that specialises in colourful under tops arranged in the personal colours, to make it easy to mix and match the perfect colours for me. Fiona also recommend a hairdresser who I went to for a good hair cut and colour. Fiona also came to my house on the morning of the party and did my make up for me, including false eyelashes! I had a great birthday party as a result! Thank you Fiona! I have already recommended you to my friends.

Gilly’s Make-up

24th December 2019 by webadmin

MAKE-UP FOR A BIRTHDAY OUTING

Fiona made me feel a million dollars…

Fiona came to my home, with her portable cases of ‘magic’! The fact that Fiona visits you in your home, I believe, is a positive as you are already relaxed, you don’t have to worry about affecting the end result with going outside until you need to go out and display the end results.

I had my make up and strip lashes done for my birthday, a girls night out. Having had previous consultations about what I do and don’t like, Fiona was able to create the perfect look for me. I very rarely wear makeup, so wanted it to look as natural as possible but with a hint of glam. The products that she uses felt light on my face and she worked well with my over rosy cheeks and redness on my chin and nose. The lashes used looked so natural. My girlfriends weren’t aware they were false until I pointed them out. Fiona chose a colour of lipstick that I can only describe as ‘I don’t think so’! But it was perfect and went so well with the coral/red jumpsuit I was wearing that night.

All in all, Fiona truly knows her ‘stuff’. I put my trust in Fiona and felt and looked amazing… Thank you Fiona.

Update after the night out

Thank you so much for my makeover, the lipstick fared really well and was commented on all night. I felt amazing last night and that was helped by you. The lashes were great, my friends didn’t realise I had false ones on.

You truly know your stuff and have an eye for what will and won’t suit.
I have attached a photo of me in my party outfit.

WHY USE MAKE-UP?

19th December 2019 by Fiona Mobbs

Why Use Make-Up?

Wearing make-up can make a huge difference to your look and confidence. Just like clothes, your make-up also needs to be in your complementary colours to enhance your look. I always loved wearing make-up but, before I knew what the right colours were for me, I was making myself look ill and older unwittingly! Here’s my “before” photo, so you can see what I mean!

Fiona's "before" picture (before colour analysis)
Picture of Fiona wearing "winter" colour clothes (bright blue, black, white) and matching make-up.

Make-Up Can Enhance Your Look (despite your clothes)

During my colour-analysis (many years ago) I realised that make-up could make a big difference, even if the clothes aren't the best. So make-up was where I started to change my look, as it was cheaper than changing my whole wardrobe. I had an amazing reaction from a bloke I didn’t know that well, so that confirmed the importance of changing to the right colours - even just with make-up - and I’ve had many compliments since!

My credentials

When I trained as a personal stylist in 2008, I was trained in make-up application but in 2013 I had more, specific, make-up training to become a professional make-up artist, so I can apply make-up for you for a special occasion or teach you how to do your own.

I love inspiring people to use make-up that is right for them (whether that’s a little or a lot), so that you can look and feel fabulous every day, and get the compliments you deserve.

I am happy to do this individually, or in a group setting. An ideal group size would be four to six.

Make-up Classes

I can teach you how to apply make-up in your colours for your eye, face-shape and “clothing personality”. In other words applying the right amount and in the best way for you.

I can run a personal class, just for you, or I can run small group classes.  These are great for a fun and different hen-party (and great preparation for the big day), or team bonding session, or just chill time with your girl-friends. Whatever your idea, talk to me if you would like to discuss how this could work for you.

From time to time, I run 'pamper parties' or open events where you can come along to see me in action, so - if you haven't already - why not subscribe to my monthly newsletter so you'll hear about any events I am planning?  Click here to go through to the sign-up page.

Please call me if you have any questions.

A NEW YEAR VIENNA ADVENTURE

26th November 2018 by Fiona Mobbs

This month’s guest blog has been written by Chrissi Knights of Explorer Travel.

I am not sure what thoughts Christmas and New Year conjure up for you, but I bet amongst other things parties and get togethers feature high on the agenda, closely followed by a panic, “What am I going to wear?” With that in mind I thought I would share with you my experience during the run up to Christmas 2017.

We all have a wish list of places we want to visit and things we want to do, don’t we? As a travel agent, my list grows longer every time I arrange travel for another client and I get that longing explorer feeling. Since 2000 we have spent every New Year somewhere new, gradually working through that ever increasing list. So last year it was time to tick off a New Year in Vienna at the Silvester Hofburg Ball. A proper ball with a requirement for men to be in tails and ladies to wear a ball gown! Panic set in at the thought of shopping; I hate shopping with a passion, but I was fortunate to know Fiona, just a phone call away.

“Help! Should I hire through the internet?”

“No,” was the reply. “How do you know that the colour will be right for you and what about the fit?” Panic! We arrange to meet at Tiffany’s in Southampton but I arrive early. More panic!

“Can I help you?” asked a member of staff, as my eyes take in the host of colours and styles on offer.

“No thanks, I am waiting for my personal shopper,” I replied. Relief! Fiona walks through the door with a big smile and we soon get to work. The American’s use a derisory saying, “Getting more bang for your buck,” but sadly I can’t think of a better phrase to use at the moment. Fiona’s expertise quickly focused on colours and styles that suited me and at no time did I feel rushed or panicky. I must have tried on ten ball gowns, all from my colours and all paraded on the catwalk before choosing a little red number. Of course the process was helped because I had already had a wonderful colour analysis and wardrobe review by Fiona.

If you are someone that hates Christmas crowds or like me panic sets in at the very thought of clothes shopping, or maybe you are stuck for something to wear at your New Year celebrations; give Fiona a call. She will be your fairy godmother just waiting to wave her magic wand and all will be well. Trust me!

Notes:
The dress needed a little altering (the hem needed to be taken up), so Fiona suggested a tailor for this.  It was a busy time of year for Five Past Seven Tailoring and Alterations (in Chandler’s Ford), but they turned it around in time and I was very happy with the result.

Sadly Tiffany’s is no longer in Southampton but you will still find them in Stubbington at 8 Stubbington Green, PO14 2JG.

In addition to the most amazing New Year ’s Eve we booked Viennese Waltz lessons on the morning of 31st December so we didn’t look complete idiots on the night.
